A husband and wife were yesterday charged with stealing several items from a residence in Rabat, including a computer tablet and an air-conditioning unit.

Charles Spiteri, 50, from Cospicua, and Catherine Spiteri, 49, from Żabbar, pleaded not guilty to the theft – which took place early in the morning of September 1 – and to being in possession of stolen goods.

Mr Spiteri, who the court heard was a drug addict, was further charged with theft of several items from a garage in Rabat between 1pm and 3pm on October 1, breaching the conditions of a previous release, and relapsing.

Magistrate Giovanni Grixti remanded Mr Spiteri in custody while his wife was granted bail against a personal guarantee of €1,500.

Police inspectors Robert Vella and Sarah Magri prosecuted while lawyers Franco Debono and Angie Muscat appeared for the couple.
