A rise has been registered in the size of the tax burden, which is the amount of taxation and social security contributions as a proportion of the country’s economic output (GDP).

According to figures released by the National Statistics Office, total tax revenues for 2013 amounted to €2.4 billion, an increase of €175 million over 2012.

Last year, the tax burden reached 33.1 per cent of GDP, up from 32.2 per cent recorded in 2012.

According to the taxation figures for 2013, public coffers benefited mostly from direct taxation which amounted to over €1 billion.

The main component, which contributed more than half of direct taxation revenues, was generated from income tax paid by individuals, which reached €522 million. Income tax from businesses totalled €477 million.

Indirect taxes, including those on consumer spending, amounted to 13.2 per cent of all income from taxes, reaching €991 million. In this area, VAT contributed €586 million. Social contributions reached €437.5 million.
