Water losses due to leakage have dwindled to such a low extent in the past few years that the upkeep of the monitoring unit has been found to be costlier than the monitoring itself and further reduction.

Answering a parliamentary question by Owen Bonnici (PL), Economy Minister Tonio Fenech said that personnel working on leak detection had been asked to perform other work which was also related to losses of revenue from water production.

The change would have no effect on the workers’ security of job tenure or the level of leakage in the distribution system.
