Local councils are not doing enough to stand up to overdevelopment, Alternattiva Demokratika said.

During a news conference over the weekend, AD chairman Michael Briguglio said the Qaliet area in St Julians was already overdeveloped due to the Portomaso project, which had grown beyond its original 1995 approval.

The developers were now proposing the construction of a further 46 apartments, totally disregarding the Environmental Impact Assessment of the project, Dr Briguglio said.

Last month, two Portomaso residents filed an injunction against developers in an attempt to block further development of the area. The injunction was dismissed by the courts, which ruled that the request was premature.

Yvonne Arqueros Ebejer, who was presented as AD’s candidate for the next St Julians local council elections, said the locality had been neglected by its local council. Residents were exposed to constant dust and noise pollution due to interminable construction works in the area.
