I was surprised to read Times of Malta early last week, and its full page dedicated to what it called pavement pinching in the Sliema to Gżira border. What is true is that the area from the Waterfront Hotel to the Ferries is actually Sliema council’s responsibility, though you would understandably not notice this as you walk along.

The problem isn’t the tables and chairs, but that Sliema council has abandoned its responsibilities here while it tries to create a residents’ parking scheme which irritates more than it helps.

It is in fact solely thanks to the entrepreneurs in this area there is some decent paving, some decent awnings to protect clients and more.

Unbelievably, some even want the beautiful awnings put up by popular restaurants like Medasia to be replaced by umbrellas!

To actually complain that the restaurants and bars are taking space when Sliema council has abandoned this area for so long shows someone did not bother to check their facts.

Wake up Sliema council. Not to the fact that we thankfully have some nice eateries in the area, but that you have done so little to maintain the area.

It is a major promenade and an important area for tourists and locals.

Rather than worry about pavements I suggest Times of Malta asks Sliema local council why it hasn’t upgraded this promenade in the same way it has other parts of the locality.
