A project to build a public garden in Cospicua has been shelved after the local council fought for seven years to get the green light, Mayor Joseph Scerri said.

In 2005, the Cospicua council had proposed turning the area in front of the Cospicua Rangers’ Club into a public garden so that families could have a recreational place close to home.

The proposal eventually got a planning permit and a call for expressions of interest was issued.

Last month, however, the Works Department told the council the project was being postponed because the only bidder’s offer was 40 per cent more expensive than the projected cost.

Mr Scerri said the council was very disappointed but was determined to keep fighting to make this open space a reality.
