Allan Gatt’s letter (January 4) is written from a selfish human perspective. His lack of knowledge as to the reality of animal circus life strongly reflects this. His criticism of animal rights groups must therefore include all the authorities in countries where circus animals have been banned, a list which is continually growing.

These countries have banned animal circuses because, contrary to what Gatt claims, their life is in continual limbo made unending with the constant reminder of prods, chains and an artificial life they are forced to endure by their trainers.

Of course, the animals in circuses are kept well fed and healthy. What circus owner would show undernourished animals and what promoter would be stupid enough to think he could make money off such animals? Wild animals or otherwise have no interest in travelling all over the world or being used for human profit.

Children are learning to accept that they can see these magnificent animals through watching educational documentaries. Tigers, lions and elephants are classified as ‘wild animals’.

National parks have been set up by those who understand that the balance of nature must be respected and try to ensure that these creatures lead the life they are entitled to live. Freedom has an invaluable worth and no man or animal would willingly trade it for a cell or cage.
