The Jean Monnet Chair of European Law at the University of Malta, with support from the European Commission, is holding its third Rights and Remedies Conference on April 13 at the Corinthia Hotel St George’s Bay, St Julian’s.

The theme of this year’s one-day conference is ‘Rights and remedies for the consumer in the European Union’. A panel of distinguished foreign speakers will discuss:

• Consumer rights and redress when shopping on online auction platforms;
• Protection against unfair contract terms in consumer contracts;
• Consumer remedies for faulty goods;
• The Commission’s recent proposal for a Common European Sales Law;
• Consumer redress in respect of unfair commercial practices;
• Collective consumer redress and alternative dispute resolution;
• Consumer protection in relation to financial services;
• Consumer redress in respect of package travel and passenger rights.

The list of speakers includes Christine Riefa, Brunel University; Chris Willett and Youseph Farah, University of Essex; Christian Twigg-Flesner, University of Hull; Mihaela Carpus-Carcea, DG Justice, European Commission; Geraint Howells, University of Manchester; Christopher Hodges, University of Oxford and Erasmus Professor at Erasmus University, Rotterdam; Udo Reifner, University of Hamburg; Klaus Tonner, University of Rostock, and judge at the Oberlandesgericht Rostock.

The conference is open to the public but will be of particular interest to the business community, consumer organisations, financial services, travel and tourism sectors, the legal profession, academics, advisers, public officers and students.

After the conference a publication and a CD containing the conference papers will be prepared and distributed to the participants free of charge.
