A conference on ‘The Relationship between Maltese Adolescents and their Parents’ is being held on October 31 at the Aula Magna of the University’s Valletta campus, St Paul Street, Valletta.

It is the first research conference organised by the University’s Centre for Family Studies and will be under the patronage of President George Abela. Mary Anne Lauri will chair the conference.

A presentation of the research project on the quality of the relationship between Maltese adolescents and their parents will be delivered by the centre’s director, Angela Abela, senior lecturer Ruth Farrugia, counselling psychologist Marita Galea and Deborah Schembri.

Educational psychologist John Coleman will deliver the keynote presentation. Dr Coleman directs the UK Trust for the Study of Adolescence. He has been senior research fellow at Oxford University’s Education Department since 2006.

He has written widely about adolescence. His main research interests include emotional health and well-being, the learning environments of young people, and the importance of new technologies.

He was awarded an OBE in 2001 for services to youth.

The conference is of interest to policymakers, experts and professionals working in this area. Parents and adolescents are also welcome.
