Performance agreements for the top three ranks in the police force was of serious concern as officers should not be given an incentive to appease the government, the Chamber of Advocates said yesterday.

The highest officers in the force should be left to carry their duty in serenity and be autonomous from the executive, it added.

Within the framework of an agreement announced in October, the commissioner, deputy commissioner and assistant commissioner were given a three-year contract subject to their performance.

The changes in the conditions of work fuelled a barrage of criticism from the Police Association, which also filed a judicial protest calling for the revocation of the agreement as it undermined the autonomy of the force.
