The government has agreed to give an additional once-only compensation for the cost of living to some 60,000 low-income families, the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development was informed yesterday. The compensation, which is expected to cost about €2 million, comes in the wake of a study by the economics unit within the Ministry of Finance and is meant to lessen the blow of several financial burdens, notably fuel costs.

Details on the amount of payment and the eligibility for it, are expected to be announced later this month.

GWU secretary general Tony Zarb, who attended the MCESD meeting, said his union wanted the compensation to cover a wider segment of families, including those with a medium income.
