The Justice Ministry has appointed a commission to coordinate work on updating the laws on civil damages and hold a public consultation on the subject.

The commission is headed by lawyer Paul Cachia. The ministry said claims for damages could include those from accidents taking place during travel or in other circumstances, cases of professional abuse, and voluntary harm.

Computation of damages includes loss of earnings, profits and other losses.

The commission will consider case law and developments in the EU, among other factors.

The other members of the commission are Charmaine Cristiano and Frederick Zammit Maempel. The chairman will be paid €750 per month and the members €450. The commission has been asked to complete its work by the end of the year.

Those wishing to make submissions may write to damages.mjcl@gov.mt.
