A Romanian who imported one kilogram of cocaine in a false bottom of his suitcase has been jailed for 14 years and fined €25,000.

Gabriel Alin Fister, 27, brought the drugs in on a flight from Amsterdam on March 30, 2009.

The court heard the cocaine had been wrapped in carbon paper, which stops a scanner’s rays, beneath thick cardboard at the bottom of luggage. The drugs were 35 per cent pure and had a street value of some €68,000.

Following plea bargaining between his lawyers and the Attorney General, Mr Justice Lawrence Quintano jailed him for 14 years and fined him €25,000.
