The historic Santa Marija coastal battery in Qbajjar Bay, Gozo, which in recent years was neglected and in a dilapidated state, suffered further misery when it was vandalised with graffiti over the weekend.

Designed by Jacques de Camus D’Arginy and Bernard de Fontet, the battery dates back to 1715 during the reign of the Knights of St John.

Throughout the years this military structure served various purposes including as a discotheque and a restaurant.

It was subsequently abandoned, with parts of it in urgent need of repair due to the fact that it is very exposed to the elements.

This act of vandalism prompted the condemnation of the Gozo Tourism Association, which said such acts tarnished the island’s reputation. It said Gozo’s historical heritage was crucial to enhance the tourism industry.

The historic fortification is located within the boundaries of the Żebbuġ local council but the council is not responsible for its maintenance. This falls under “third parties” but it is not clear who these are.

Deputy mayor Mario Cassar yesterday said when contacted that he had filed a motion condemning this vandal act, while urging the central government to take urgent action.

He said one possible solution could be for the battery to be devolved to the council, which in turn would apply for funds to restore it. This motion will be debated tomorrow evening.

Anyone having information on this case can contact the police on 2156 2040.
