Birkirkara were off to a disappointing start in the Champions League qualifiers after the Malta champions suffered an 8-0 defeat to Olimpia Cluj, of Romania, at the Centenary Stadium yesterday. The Romanians were in a class of their own and were already five goals ahead by the end of the first half before wrapping up the win with three other goals after the break. Birkirkara play their second match tomorrow when they face Portugal’s Dezembro at the Centenary Stadium, with kick-off set at 5.30 p.m. Yesterday, the Portuguese eased past Northern Ireland’s Glentoran 4-0.
