An Ethiopian clinic, built in memory of a young Maltese man who died in a work-related accident has opened its doors for the first time, providing 10,000 families with much-needed medical facilities.

Built in the Ethiopian village of Karro over the past six months, Wayne’s clinic includes emergency and vaccination quarters, examination and counselling rooms, medical record facilities, an administration centre and a pharmacy.

It was built in memory of Wayne Vella, the 25-year-old Mġarr native who died in 2010 following a freak bulldozer accident. Mr Vella was active in the Kilimanjaro Challenge, which prepares people for an arduous trek to the top of Africa’s highest peak for charity.

The clinic was officially inaugurated last month by Nekemte Bishop Teo and Mgr George Grima from the Missionary Movement Jesus in Thy Neighbour. A number of Mr Vella’s family members were also present.

Financed by donations made to the Kilimanjaro Challenge, Wayne’s clinic will be staffed by members of the Missionary Movement and Sisters of Mary congregation.

“Wayne was a witty, intelligent, marvellously talented young man who would light up any room with his presence,” said Kilimanjaro Challenge coordinator Keith Marshall.

“If we couldn’t have Wayne any more, we could at least keep his memories alive through the thing he loved best, the children.”
