The second round of races from the ASMK Trials Championship was held on Sunday at a Fawwara quarry in the limits of Siġġiewi.

On the day, the 10 riders who challenged the natural obstacles were grouped in two classes, Novices and Open.

In Class A, Damon Bonello and Antonio Leonardi, both on Gas Gas motorbikes, and Rowen Bonello, on Beta, were engaged in a tight race for the day’s honours.

During the first section, held over natural terrain, Damon Bonello and Leonardi finished with equal points but in the second section Leonardi lost pace, allowing Rowen Bonello to get back into contention.

There was a status quo in the third section, following a Clean score by the top three contenders, but then it was Damon Bonello who took the upperhand and finished with three other perfect rounds.

Leonardi was the runner-up ahead of Rowen Bonello. Nick Farrugia (Gas Gas) classified fourth.

The Class B title at the Fawwara quarry went to Tony Curmi (Beta).

He performed particularly well in sections two and three to stave off the bold challenge from Manuel Camilleri (Gas Gas).

Curmi only had 36 penalty points to Camilleri’s 44 as Dennis Grech (Sherco) placed third.

Meanwhile, competition at the circuit in Ta’ Qali continues on Sunday with the racing series from the Autocross and Motocross championships.

At present, Gordon Johnson, on Opel Corsa, is leading the Modified Class with 74 points. He is followed by Philip Joe Vella (Opel Corsa) with 65 points while Karl Micallef (Ford Fiesta) and Joseph Micallef (Opel Corsa) are sharing third spot with 62.

In Autocross Standard, competition is hot as the first three drivers are very close to each other in the provisional standings.

Deane Farrugia (Citroen AX) tops the list with 25 points ahead of Ian Fenech (Citroen AX), 24, and Nicovich Chircop (Peugeot 206), 22.

Sunday’s programme also includes a trial event for specially-equipped motorcycles on a flat circuit.
