Jacqueline Calleja (July 18) is prepared ‘to pay the cost’ of integrating the very large numbers of members of the Muslim religion arriving illegally on our islands, quoting Islam’s abhorrence to homosexual unions as an example of the meeting point of our two religions.

Quite apart from the social demands of Islam on a westernised society but sticking to our ‘religious similarities’, would she also be in favour of the introduction to our islands of plural marriages and of the ultimate simplification of the divorce process (the husband merely says “I divorce you” three times in front of witnesses)?

Would she agree to the introduction of religious Sharia law for those who prefer to be ruled by it rather than by our more liberal courts and of the inhumane slaughter of animals to provide religiously acceptable meat for the table? Would she accept the strict obedience in all things of the wife to the husband, of capital punishment for adultery and so on?

If enough fundamentalists reach our shores and start demanding that this country be returned to the Ummah, from which it was prised by the Normans, would she also accept this? I doubt it.

This is not ‘racism’, ‘xenophobia’ or ‘islamophobia’.

I have the greatest respect for Islam but I would prefer to keep my own culture and way of life.

I suspect that the majority of Maltese and Gozitans are of a similar view.
