Germany striker Mario Gomez scored twice as Bayern Munich beat Manchester City 2-0 in their Champions League match yesterday to give the winners their 10th straight victory.

After a 2-0 win at Villarreal a fortnight ago, the result leaves Bayern firmly in control of Group A and went some way to answering questions about the German league leaders’ defence as they subdued Man. City’s star-studded attack.

City, currently only second in the Premier League to neighbours Manchester United, had few answers to Bayern’s all-out attack and now have just one point from their opening two Champions League games in their debut campaign.

Gomez’s first-half brace leaves him with 11 goals in his last seven games for Bayern in all competitions, while Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer picked up his 10th clean-sheet and he has conceded just one goal in 12 games this season.

It was only City’s second defeat of the season since they lost the Charity Shield final to United on August 7 as Bayern dominated at the 66,000-sell out Allianz Arena, which will host the final next May.

At Old Trafford, United needed a last-gasp goal from Ashley Young to snatch a 3-3 draw with Swiss side FC Basel.

Young steered in a 90th-minute header from a Nani cross to deny Basel a famous victory after two goals from Alex Frei and one from namesake Fabian Frei had fired the Swiss side into a 3-2 lead at Old Trafford.

United, missing the injured Wayne Rooney, had looked to be cruising to victory early on after two first-half goals in the space of a minute from Danny Welbeck helped them into a 2-0 lead at the break.

But Alex Ferguson’s men were left shellshocked by a superb second-half fightback from the Swiss visitors, who ruthlessly punished slack defending by the English champions to go within a whisker of a famous upset.

The draw leaves Basel on top of Group C with four points from two games, with Portuguese side Benfica second having scored less goals. United are two points off the pace after two games.

Napoli also took a big step towards qualification for the knock-out stages by dominating Villarreal in a 2-0 victory at the San Paolo.

It means the Italians trail Bayern Munich by two points in Group A after two games but crucially they are respectively three and four points ahead of Manchester City and Villarreal on their debut in the competition under its current format.

Marek Hamsik opened the scoring and Edinson Cavani added a penalty inside the first 17 minutes in a first period controlled by the hosts.

Villarreal livened up a little after the break but failed to create many clear-cut chances and their second round hopes are hanging by a thread after earning no points from their first two matches.

Inter beat CSKA

New Inter coach Claudio Ranieri saw the 2010 European champions chalk up their first points in Champions League Group B with a 3-2 win at CSKA Moscow.

It was a testing night for the Nerazzurri in the Russian capital, however, with victory not assured until Mauro Zarate netted late on after CSKA had fought back from 2-0 down to level the score.

Brazilian defender Lucio and forwards Giampaolo Pazzini and Zarate were all on target as Inter recorded their fifth win over CSKA in as many Champions League meetings.

Midfielder Alan Dzagoev and Brazilian forward Vagner Love found the net for the Red Army side.

In Turkey, Gustavo Colman’s 75th-minute penalty maintained Trabzonspor’s lead at the top of Group B.

Moussa Sow had given Ligue 1 champions Lille a 31st-minute lead with his second goal in as many games but Colman’s 75th-minute spot-kick ensured parity.

Real Madrid made it two wins from two in Champions League Group D with a clinical dismissal of Ajax at the Bernabeu.

After opening with a laboured 1-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb on matchday one, Jose Mourinho’s men looked more in the mood last night and eased to the three points thanks to goals by Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema.

The result was perhaps a touch harsh on an Ajax side who matched their hosts for large swathes of the first half, but Real’s clinical finishing proved the difference.

Goals by Bafetimbi Gomis and Bakary Kone guided Lyon to victory as they consolidated second place behind Real with an impressive performance against Dinamo Zagreb.

Gomis put the French side ahead midway through the first half with a classy chip before Kone effectively sealed the three points with a tap-in three minutes before the break.

It meant Lyon marked their 100th Champions League game with victory as they dominated their Croatian opponents to move three points clear in second behind Real Madrid in Group D.
