My husband and I have just returned from Malta and, as usual, had a wonderful trip. The Maltese people are wonderful, generous with their time and extremely proud of their country as well.

On October 10, we had a lovely day in Valletta, with lots of interesting things to see and do. By about 3 p.m. we were both tired and walked down the hill to the catch the ferry to Sliema. When we had almost reached the ferry a young man, who was standing outside Cockney’s Restaurant said: “The ferry isn’t working today; too windy.” He is the grandson of the original founders, he later told us. Exhaustion had set in and the thought of climbing back up to the bus station was daunting. I asked him if he could call a taxi for us. He disappeared into the restaurant and came out carrying car keys. He said he would take us to the bus station. This was such a wonderful gesture.

I would like to thank him and his parents as well for bringing up such a lovely young man. His name is Ian and what he didn’t know was that I am recovering from meningitis and brain surgery, so this thoughtful act was so generous of him and a godsend for us.

I love The Times and read it each day when we are staying in Malta.
