Valletta Subbuteo Club are the winners of this year’s Malta Grand Prix following victory over their rivals from Bormla in the final played at the 12th May Band Club hall in Żebbuġ.

Valletta SC had the better of another team from the capital, Valletta Lions, 2-0 in the semi-finals as the Bormla boys eliminated Attard SC, also 2-0.

Valletta SC were in a class of their own in the final as they beat Bormla SC 4-0.

Day Two of the Grand Prix was reserved for individual competitions.

In the Open, Mark Gauci beat world no.2 Carlos Flores, of Spain, 4-2 in the final.

Gauci reached the final after a 6-1 win over Jean Carl Tabone in the semi-finals.

In the competition for veteran players, Massimo Cremona beat Charles Aquilina 1-0 to seal the title.

In the previous round, Cremona won 3-2 on penalties against Joseph Mifsud after the game had finished 0-0 in normal time. Aquilina beat Jason Pisani 2-0 in the other match from the last four.

Melvin Barun, of Valletta Lions, headed the U-19 league with seven points with Tristan Fenech finishing in the runner-up position with five.

The U-15 category was won by Mark Calleja, a newcomer to the sport and a member of the Valletta Lions nursery. He topped the standings with seven points followed by Aiden Williams, six, and Jurgen Balzan, four.

Another player making his debut in the Grand Prix, Andrew Deguara, also left his mark as the Valletta Lions youngster won the U-12 competition.

Thomas Ebejer was second. He had a better goal difference than Jamie Bonnici.
