Manchester City have been drawn to face Steaua Bucharest, of Romania, in the Champions League play-off round, yesterday.

City finished fourth in the Premier League last season and so must earn their place in the lucrative group stage, as new boss Pep Guardiola, winner of the competition twice with Barcelona, looks to go one better than the 2015-16 semi-final run under Manuel Pellegrini.

Former champions Porto have been handed a tough tie against Roma while four-times winners Ajax face Russian side FC Rostov.

Celtic were handed a tie against Israeli side Hapoel Beer-Sheva.

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti said the play-off against Porto was more than a qualifier, highlighting the value of the tie, both in terms of finance and prestige.

“Porto? We’ll see what happens,” Spalletti said.

“However, for what it’s worth on the pitch, it is a tie worth more than a qualifier.”

Brendan Rodgers’s Celtic beat Kazakh team Astana in the third qualifying round.

Dundalk are aiming to become the first team from the Republic of Ireland to qualify for the group stage of the Champions League and will face Legia Warsaw, of Poland, this month.

The Lilywhites produced a shock victory over BATE Borisov to secure a shot at reaching Europe’s elite club competition.

City sporting director Txiki Begiristain said there will be no complacency against Steaua.

“It’s going to be a difficult tie because Steaua are on the up again in Europe and have a lot of talent,” he said.

Dundalk, who currently lead the League of Ireland, were the team with lowest coefficient rating in the draw and will play their home leg at the 51,700-seater Aviva Stadium in Dublin, rather than at the 4,500-capacity Oriel Park.

The 10 play-off winners will join 22 automatic entrants in the group stage, which will include English champions Leicester City for the first time.

Elsewhere, Villarreal play Monaco, with the losers set to go into the Europa League.

Also yesterday, West Ham United were drawn against Astra Giurgiu, of Romania, in the play-off round of the Europa League.

The Irons defeated Slovenian side NK Domzale 4-2 on aggregate following a 3-0 victory in the first competitive match at their new Olympic Stadium home on Thursday night.

After finishing seventh in the Premier League, Slaven Bilic’s men will be aiming to join Manchester United and Southampton in the group phase of Europe’s second-tier competition.

It is the second season in a row that West Ham United have been paired with Astra, who knocked them out in the third qualifying round in 2015.

The Romanians had started their European campaign this year in the Champions League qualifiers, but earlier this week lost out to Copenhagen in the third round.

Sassuolo will play Red Star, of Serbia, in the play-offs round.

Eusebio di Francesco’s Serie A outfit made their debut in the European competition in the previous round, eliminating Swiss League side FC Lucern 4-1 on aggregate.

Sassuolo will be at home first, before heading to Belgrade for the return leg a week later.
