The traffic arrangement for motorists proceeding to the Hastings Garden area has resulted in making Vincenti Buildings a traffic island. Traffic is intense, with all types of vehicles using this route including the Arriva buses. Besides the health hazard due to noxious fumes, Strait Street between St John’s and Melita streets has become for most of the drivers a 100-metre speed test. I have witnessed three near fatal accidents, including one involving my 11-year-old niece. None of the drivers cared to stop.

I reported these incidents to the local council and suggested the laying of sleeping policemen, but this authority does not seem to be keen to do so as the noise they make may interfere with the residents’ sleep during the night.

A report has also been lodged with the police. Two or three speed bumps might be the solution together with traffic signs limiting speed to 20km.

Can some action be taken to avert accidents?
