The 17th edition of the popular National Cinema Day will take place on Saturday.

Once more, KRS Film Distributors together with cinema exhibitors are offering filmgoers of all ages the chance to watch some of the best film releases of the year, at discounted prices of €3.50 for normal films and €5 for 3D films.

Film screenings at all cinemas on the day will start at 9 a.m. and run until late night, while screenings at the two-screen Citadel Cinema in Gozo will be at 6 and 8.30/9 pm.

To ensure that this year’s National Cinema Day will be yet another celebration of cinema, KRS and local exhibitors have planned a programme of films which includes no fewer than 12 blockbusters and a range of films of all genres to satisfy the tastes of the thousands of cinema buffs who flock to the cinema on the day.

Among the major blockbuster titles on show will be the hugely popular Marvel Avengers Assemble, which features six superheroes banding together to fight a threat against the world; The Amazing Spider-Man (3D), the latest incarnation of the action hero as played by Andrew Garfield; the sci-fi drama Prometheus (3D), which offers a fascinating new take on the Alien universe; Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones reunite in Men in Black 3; the unusual Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (3D); and battle extravaganza Battleship, based on the popular game of the same name.

The selection of comedies include the latest entry in the ever-popular American Pie franchise with American Pie: Reunion; comedian Sacha Baron-Cohen gets up to his usual politically incorrect mischief as The Dictator and an ensemble cast comes to terms with various pregnancies in What to Expect When You’re Expecting.

Crime drama Safe should appeal to action buffs, as will the Mel Gibson-starrer How I Spent my Summer Vacation. Dramas on show include the sober In a Better World, while teens will no doubt flock to The Lucky One starring heartthrob Zac Efron.

Other films to be featured are the nostalgia-filled musical Rock of Ages which harks back to the 1980s. In the meantime, those who like their films to be a tad unusual should check out director Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, starring Johnny Depp. Also being screened is one of the breakout hits of the year, The Hunger Games, based on the hugely popular novel by Suzanne Collins.

The following cinemas will be participating in National Cinema Day: Eden Cinema, St Julian’s (23710400); Empire Cinema, Buġibba (2158 1787); Embassy Cinema, Valletta (2122 2225); Tal-Lira Cinema, Fgura (2180 8000) and Citadel Cinema, Gozo (2155 9955). Early booking is recommended.
