Maximilian Ciantar told a magistrate yesterday his cases got more media coverage than wars.

Mr Ciantar, who stands charged with a number of driving violations, addressed the court as his lawyer, Joe Mifsud, was requesting bail.

He said that if a bomb went off in a church and he had a car accident at the same time, his case would be reported first.

In another sitting, Mr Ciantar said he was the most unlucky person in the world.

Mr Ciantar is pleading not guilty to damaging two cars, driving a car negligently and dangerously, driving while under a court ban, without a driving licence and insurance.

He is also accused of using vulgar language in public, threatening two people, breaching previous court sentences and disobeying police orders at Mater Dei Hospital.

The court has been told that Mr Ciantar hit a car’s side view mirror while driving at speed in Marsa.

The other driver, Joseph Catania, said they both stopped and his daughter, Alysia, the car owner, got out and told Mr Ciantar: “Look what you did.”

Mr Ciantar started swearing and an argument ensued, the witness said. After calling him “an old man”, he said Mr Ciantar went back to his car and reversed, hitting their car again, before driving off.

Since the accident, Mr Ciantar’s father had approached him and offered to pay for the damages, Mr Catania said.

Probation officer Maryrose Farrugia said that, on the day of the accident, she had called Mr Ciantar because he had missed an appointment.

The call was made after the accident and she said he seemed to be out of sorts and was taken to the Detoxification Centre where he was diagnosed with suffering from an overdose and was referred to hospital.

Ms Farrugia said she had been following Mr Ciantar since 2007 and, between June last year and this June, he was tested 10 times for drugs and was clean every time.

While he did listen to her and heed advice, on the day of the accident he had overdosed because he had a problem with his girlfriend, the witness said.

The court has still to decide on bail. The case continues.
