I do not agree at all with Mgr Joseph Farrugia’s thoughts on The Times debate on the Church (October 3). I was present in the hall and, in my view, Mgr Anton Gouder just

sat on the fence defending the status quo. Not only that, he also tried to belittle Cardinal Martini by implying that he did nothing in 23 years.

I too believe the Church must change its emphasis from defending its doctrinal rules to focusing on the individual. I feel that the Church has moved too far from the teachings of Christ.

The whole point of Jesus was to help us grow in love for God and for one another.

It is not about a “club” where you join and follow the rules or just get out. The Church must be there for everybody to help us grow spiritually. Whether we are straight or gay, married or divorced we should all be able to access the Eucharist and participate in the path that leads to God through Jesus Christ.

The debate was good.
