Chris Agius... WADA role.Chris Agius... WADA role.

Chris Agius, the Parliamentary Secretary for Research, Innovation, Youth and Sport, has been unanimously selected as one of the three officials representing the European Union on the Foundation Board of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

The other EU representatives are the ministers responsible for sport in Belgium and Luxembourg.

The WADA was established in 1999 as an international independent agency composed of the sport movement and governments across the world.

Its key activities include scientific research, education, development of anti-doping capacities, and monitoring of the world anti-doping code which harmonises sports anti-doping policies in all countries.

On behalf of the European Union, Agius will be representing the future trio presidency (made up of The Netherlands, Slovakia and Malta) on the WADA Foundation Board, WADA’s supreme decision-making body composed of 38 member representatives from the Olympic Movement and governments.

“The Maltese government has always embraced WADA’s main aims to protect the clean athlete and provide a level playing field for all, which requires the will of everyone who wants, and believes in, pure and fair sport,” a press release from the Department of Information said.

“The Maltese government considers that representation in the WADA Foundation Board provides it with an opportunity to renew its commitment towards setting the fight against doping as a top priority and sustain a zero-tolerance policy on cheating.”
