Anthony ChircopLong-time president Anthony Chircop is set to end his tenure at the helm of the Malta Amateur Athletic Association (MAAA) after announcing that he will not be seeking re-election in the 2014 annual general meeting.
Chircop, who has been leading the MAAA for the last 18 years, made the announcement during a presentations night last week.
“I want to express my gratitude to all the members of the Council, present as well as those who have been part of the MAAA in the last 18 years,” Chircop said.
“This is a special occasion for me as I’ve decided not to contest the election for president of the association next March… the time has come for the MAAA to elect a new leader.”
In his address, Chircop thanked the technical officials who, throughout the year, helped the association to control both field and road running events.
“The assistance of these officials was crucial in ensuring that our events ran smoothly,” Chircop, who also thanked the authorities and sports organisations who assisted the association along the years, said.
The MAAA president also explained that the council followed a number of pre-set criteria in selecting the winners of the athletes of the year awards.
Candidates were awarded points according to their best performances, participation in the National Championships and international events, national records and medals won abroad.
The 2013 athletes of the year are Kevin Arthur Moore and Rebecca Camilleri.
