The Chinese Cultural Centre started its 10th anniversary in Malta with a fusion of performing arts – from Beijing opera to Chinese acrobatics – at the Open Theatre in Valletta on Saturday.

The centre was set up in Valletta on September 19, 2003, and more than 1,000 cultural activities have been held since.

The well-attended performance was repeated in Marsascala on Sunday and yesterday in Gozo.

Called Beautiful Qinghai, the performance was held by the Qinghai Performing Art Group, winner of domestic and international art competitions.

Set on the northwest plateau of China, Qinghai is at the source of the Yellow, Yangtze and Lancang rivers.

During the performance on Saturday, Chinese instruments, including the wind instruments bawu, hulusi and souna, mesmerised the packed open theatre just before a dance troupe filled the stage with African moves. The event included aerobatic jar tricks, Peking opera, Mongolian, West Coast and Tibetan dance.

Among the events marking its establishment in Malta, the centre will open its art gallery to the public on Friday after inaugurating a photo exhibition marking the 10th anniversary. The gallery will remain open between 8.30am and 1pm Monday to Friday, until September 27.
