This year’s ‘Rights 4U’ course organised recently by the Commissioner for Children combined educating youths about their rights with teaching them about solidarity with older generations.
The eighth edition of the annual three-day live-in course focused on children’s personal development, critical thinking skills, building social ties, and implementing concepts such as respect, responsibility, inclusion and independence.
In keeping with the ‘Bridging generations’ theme of the course, the participants this year were also involved in activities with elderly people residing at a Mtarfa home to make them more aware about the contributions older generations make to society. The theme tied in with 2012 being the ‘European year for active ageing and solidarity between generations’.
HSBC Malta Foundation deputy chairperson Sarah Watkinson said the foundation supported the course because “it offers children experiences and tools to appreciate their rights and, in turn, benefit from the empowerment and sense of dignity this provides”.
