Children in residential homes, ranging between three and 16 years of age, together with their respective carers, enjoyed fun-filled days of activities which focused on how to use the internet and its various applications in a safe way.

This event complemented other nationwide initiatives undertaken as part of the BeSmartOnline! project. Co-funded by the European Union, the project is implemented by a consortium coordinated by the Malta Communications Authority and includes the Foundation for Social Welfare Services and the Office of the Commissioner for Children. The Cyber Crime Unit of the Malta Police Force also supported this event.

Specialised talks and activities targeting different age groups were given, with the aim of educating and empowering children with the tools required to avoid falling victims to online risks, whilst enriching their online experiences.

The Foundation for Social Welfare Services, through Aġenzija Appoġġ and the Police Cyber Crime Unit, shared local and foreign case studies with the carers, offering valuable tips on how to protect children whilst they are learning and having fun online.

The children were invited to present creative plays and puppet shows at the end of the event, which demonstrated their understanding of the topics that were covered throughout the day.

For further information on how to stay safe online, call Helpline 179 or visit www.besmartonline.org.mt. The services offered by the helpline have been extended so that assistance is now also offered on internet safety-related issues. The public may also report illegal content or activity on www.childwebalert.gov.mt.
