Classy Chelsea romped to a 5-0 win at Schalke 04 last night to power into the last 16 of the Champions League and make it a miserable night for their former coach Roberto Di Matteo.

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi set a Champions League scoring record of 74 goals while a Sergio Aguero hat-trick kept alive Manchester City’s hopes of reaching the knock-out stages after the English champions beat 10-man Bayern Munich 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium.

In Germany Chelsea captain John Terry headed in a corner after 78 seconds and Willian doubled the lead with a fierce low shot on the half hour as the Group G leaders extended their unbeaten start to the season to 19 games in all competitions.

A Jan Kirchhoff own goal in the 44th minute made it 3-0 and second-half goals from substitutes Didier Drogba and Ramires mean Schalke’s qualification hopes now hang in the balance.

Schalke, who hit the woodwork in the first half, had little to offer against a rampant Chelsea attack as coach Di Matteo lost his first meeting against the team he led to Champions League glory in 2012.

Chelsea clinched top spot in the group with 11 points from five games while the Germans are on five points with one match remaining.

It was the first home defeat for Schalke since Italian Di Matteo took charge last month.

Sporting Lisbon ended Maribor's hopes with a 3-1 win that was delayed by 50 minutes due to floodlight failure at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

The home side led 2-1 at half-time after Carlos Mane had put them ahead and a stunner from Nani doubled the lead before a Jefferson Nascimento own goal closed the gap.

The lights went out during the interval causing a lengthy delay and when play resumed, Islam Slimani grabbed a third to seal the win.

Messi set a new scoring mark in the competition with a hat-trick and Luis Suarez netted his first in Barcelona colours as the Spaniards comprehensively beat APOEL Nicosia 4-0.

Suarez opened the scoring and his Barca account in the 27th minute after his clever turn beat Joao Guilherme on the left-hand edge of the penalty area.

Messi surpassed the record of 71 goals he jointly held with former Real Madrid and Schalke 04 striker Raul when he put Barcelona 2-0 ahead, redirecting a Rafinha shot into the APOEL goal.

The Argentine doubled his account to make it 3-0 in the 58th minute after a superb throughball from Dani Alves, before Rafinha was sent off for a second yellow card.

APOEL’s Guilherme also saw red five minutes before full-time and Messi rounded off the scoring with his 74th Champions League goal when he slotted home easily from Pedro’s cutback after the Spaniard had evaded the offside trap.

Barcelona stay second in Group F with 12 points, a point behind leaders Paris St Germain who they face in their final match.

The French champions were inspired by Zlatan Ibrahimovic as they coasted to a 3-1 home win against Ajax.

Edinson Cavani scored a double and Ibrahimovic found the back of the net with a clever half-volley.

Ajax had briefly levelled through Davy Klaasen, who benefited from yet another lapse in concentration at the heart of PSG’s defence.

At the Etihad Stadium, Aguero struck a hat-trick, including two late goals, in a 3-2 victory against 10-man Bayern Munich to keep alive their hopes of reaching the knock-out phase.

Stunning win

Aguero raced through to slot past Manuel Neuer in the 85th and 91st minutes to snatch a stunning win, the Argentine having given City a 21st minute lead with a penalty after Bayern’s Mehdi Benatia was shown a red card for bringing him down.

Xabi Alonso and Robert Lewandowski had struck before halftime to put the visitors in front at the break.

City are level on five points with CSKA Moscow and Roma, who earlier drew 1-1, and know if they win in Rome and the Russians fail to beat Bayern in the final round of Group E matches they will qualify for the last 16.

Earlier, CSKA Moscow’s Vasili Berezutski scored in the third minute of stoppage time to grab a draw against Roma.

Roma appeared to have one foot in the knockout stages when the evergreen Francesco Totti netted with a thunderbolt of a free-kick just before half-time.

Yet Berezutski got the faintest touch to a set piece that was floated in from the left to grab a precious point.
