A 21-year-old who led the police on a high-speed car chase from Rabat to Vittoriosa last month was jailed for nine months and fined €3,500.

Dustin Bugeja, from Vittoriosa was arraigned on December 30 and was remanded in custody.

A policeman from the motorcycles unit waved him to stop driving a Mercedes, which was bearing foreign number plates. But Mr Bugeja ignored him and traffic and rapid intervention units chased the car until it was cornered in Vittoriosa.

Mr Bugeja took off because he knew the car was not registered and also he knew he should have been at home under a curfew imposed by the court as part of bail conditions, his lawyers, Veronique Dalli and Dean Hili, said.

He pleaded guilty to the charges and also to breaching bail on three occasions.

Magistrate Francesco Depasquale jailed him for nine months for breaching the bail conditions and fined him €3,500 for the traffic offences.
