A driver of a traditional Maltese horse drawn cab yesterday pleaded not guilty to slightly injuring his mother during an arraignment in which he refused to be represented by a lawyer.
The alleged incident took place between Emanuel Theuma, 41, of Guardamangia and his mother Catherine on Sunday afternoon at around 3 p.m. at her flat in San Ġwann. Mr Theuma is also charged with threatening her.
Police Inspector Trevor Micallef told Magistrate Franco Depasquale that the argument was a long standing one and the accused had threatened his mother in the past.
He added that, as regards bail, he would be was satisfied if the court could guarantee, by way of strict conditions, that the accused does not approach his mother.
The magistrate granted the accused bail against a personal guarantee of €2,500 and ordered him not to communicate in any way with his mother.
