David Curmi is the new president of the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry.

He was elected unanimously for a two-year term during this week’s council meeting where he was uncontested, the chamber said in a statement.

Mr Curmi replaces Tancred Tabone, who quit in February for “personal reasons”. Mr Tabone is one of several people who are facing charges over the Enemalta oil procurement scandal.

Following his election Mr Curmi declared that the chamber will continue to embrace a professional, constructive and non-confrontational approach.

This approach, he said, always served the organisation well in the past and that, under his leadership, the chamber would continue to seek to convince the authorities through reasoned and researched positions.

Mr Curmi joined the chamber in 1988 and served as vice president in 2002 and 2003, as well as in other board of management positions. The council will meet again in the coming days to elect the board of management.

In a statement, the General Workers Union congratulated Mr Curmi and said it was looking forward to working with him and the chamber.
