New planning authority chairman Vince Cassar has been permitted to continue doing private work provided it “does not potentially create a conflict of interest with his role”, according to a Mepa spokesman.

Mr Cassar was appointed as chairman, whereas his predecessor Austin Walker’s title was executive chairman, the spokesman added.

This meant the administration and day-to-day responsibilities in running the authority fell under the remit of the chief executive officer.

The authority issued a statement to clarify certain statements made in the media. Malta Today reported that Mr Cassar will be receiving an annual salary of €17,999, a total of €76,205 less than Mr Walker – but would be allowed to supplement his income with private work.

“Mr Cassar, who throughout most of his professional career has served in the public sphere in various high profile roles, had only one pending planning application at Mepa when he took on the chairmanship role.

“Upon his appointment, Mr Cassar informed the applicant he could no longer assume responsibility for the application,” the spokesman said.

Since he was not appointed executive chairman, Mr Cassar was allowed to carry on and undertake private work which did not potentially create a conflict of interest with his role as chairman, he added.
