With Rangers in the doldrums, no one doubted that Celtic would cruise to the Scottish Premier League title last season. They went on to make it a double, the 15th in the club’s history, after winning the FA Cup as well.
Rangers, promoted to Division Two at the end of last season, are on a recovery mission after going into administration. The Gers’ off-field mishaps and financial mismanagement were a shattering blow to the famed club and Scottish football altogether.
In fact, some critics described Rangers’ crisis as the biggest event in the history of Scottish football in the last three decades as the Glasgow club owed the taxman £50 million.
In the FA Cup final, Celtic beat Hibernian 3-0 while in the other domestic cup competition, St Mirren edged Hearts 3-2 to claim the League Cup for the first time in their history.
Manager Neil Lennon became only the third man to win the double at Celtic as player and manager. The other two were Jock Stein and Billy McNeill.
As Scottish Premier League winners, Celtic will compete in the qualifying rounds of the Champions League while runners-up Motherwell and third-placed St Johnstone will take part in the Europa League.
Hibernian will also play in the Europa League qualifying rounds as beaten finalists in the FA Cup.
