The leader of the Opposition, Simon Busuttil, insists on continuing to take the mickey out of his own diehard supporters. His reaction to his second defeat in a row since taking over the reins of the PN is simply mind-boggling and hilarious.

Instead of humbly accepting defeat and congratulating the Prime Minister for inflicting another historic defeat on the PN, which, percentage wise, is similar to the 2013 general election (54 per cent), Busuttil gave a euphoric reaction as if he and his party had won the council elections.

He went as far as to say that the PN had succeeded in narrowing the gap between the two parties by half when the turnout was just 68 per cent and only half of Malta voted.

I sincerely believe that Busuttil and his leadership colleagues had no other alternative in order to save Busuttil’s leadership of the PN until the general election of 2018.

In fact, in celebrating this defeat, Busuttil is imitating Alfred Sant’s wrong decision to celebrate when the PN had won the EU membership referendum.

I honestly pity those genuine and serious voters who still support the PN for having their intelligence insulted in such a way.
