An exhibition of “traces” caught on camera will open tomorrow at the St James Centre for Creativity in Valletta.

This “alternative photographic work” was produced following a series of workshops conducted by photographer Patrick J. Fenech at the Department of Digital Arts within the University of Malta’s Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences.

Mr Fenech passed on the theme of Traces of Traces – recurrent in his work for the past 40 years – to the students, engaging them in discussion to develop ideas and produce an exhibition.

“A photo is a trace in itself – we create traces when taking photos. For this exhibition we’re taking photos of traces that people leave behind them... traces of traces.

We create traces when taking photos

“A photo of a trace is the opposite of a photo that depends on the ‘decisive moment’. Usually photos depend on the moment, like shots of the airplanes crashing in the Twin Towers in 2001.

“This is the opposite: the photo is planned, and you can revisit the place. Contemporary photography usually instigates a debate or a discussion.”

Traces of Traces will include some 20 pieces by 10 students and another 25 pieces by Mr Fenech himself. It will remain open until December 2.
