The visitors’ room at the prisons has been transformed into a scene from biblical times to promote a positive message of inclusion for those who are trying to reform.

Eighteen inmates at the Corradino Correctional Facility have come together to produce and perform a Passion play called His Love Changed Me (L-Imħabba Tiegħu… Biddlitni).

Based on the story of Mary Magdalene, the woman who was saved by Jesus Christ from being stoned by a mob, the play focuses on a message of forgiveness.

The story is adapted to modern times, where two people – one of whom is the victim of a crime – gossip in the village square about a prisoner. However, the theme of forgiveness comes through as they have a change of heart and work towards embracing him in their community.

Organised by Rise Malta, an association that works with prisoners, as well as the prison chaplaincy and Corradino Correctional Facility, the play focuses on the importance of love and forgiveness to allow inmates to change and reform. It also showcases what victims of crimes, their families and inmates’ families go through.

Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela watched a performance yesterday and spoke about a recent initiative in which inmates could participate in a number of workshops to provide them with skills to help them reintegrate in society.

The play runs from 9.30am to noon and 3pm to 7pm on Sunday, and 4.30pm to 10pm on March 30 and April 1. On April 2 – Maundy Thursday – from 5pm onwards and from 9.30am to noon. On Good Friday, April 3, from 5pm.
