Catholics between the ages of 18 and 60 have the duty to fast today and on Good Friday and those over 14 should not eat meat, the Church said in a statement.

The Church reminded its followers that today, Ash Wednesday, was the start of the 40 days of Lent, a time of penitence ahead of the celebration of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Malta’s bishops called on people to be authentic in all they do during Lent and not to allow it to become a routine that robbed the experience of its significance.

Lent was a time for penitence, they said.

Ways to show penitence included attending Mass during weekdays, refraining from alcohol and cigarettes, saying the rosary, reducing spending and being more charitable and helping others.
