Gunmen have kidnapped a Roman Catholic priest in southern Nigeria and it was unclear if a ransom had been demanded, police said yesterday.

“The armed men kidnapped the Reverend Father Sylvester Chukwura from his residence in the early hours of Tuesday. His whereabouts are still unknown,” the deputy police chief of Edo state, Hurdi Mohammed, said. The kidnappers have contacted the priest’s family once, but Mohammed could not say if they demanded a ransom.
