Referring to Beppe Fenceh Adami as a potential Nationalist leader, Henry Galea wrote that his “involvement with the Church would not leave him completely free to lead” (March 20).

It is obvious Galea is neither familiar with the teachings of the Church nor with certain historical facts. The Church was established by Jesus and its teachings are therefore those of His dynamics when He says He is the truth and truth will set us free. Nothing is imposed on us.

Thus, a practising Catholic leader is not only free to lead but can do so with inspiration from the Gospel and Encyclicals, such as Gaudium et Spes, the most important document on Catholic social teachings, which is advantageous to believers and non-believers alike.

Furthermore, the virtue of humility, essential not only to our everyday life but to leadership, is a uniquely Christian virtue. This brings to mind the humility and simplicity with which Mary Fenech Adami played her role, as acknowledged by people from all walks of life. More recently, the Christian characteristic of Pope Francis instantly won the hearts of all. In the local political scene, a distinct case in point is Eddie Fenech Adami’s successful premiership inspired again by Christian values. Prime Minister Joseph Muscat himself refers to this leadership quite often.

Robert Schuman – founder of the European Union among others – was referred to as the saint in a business suit. The Labour Party today in government is happily reaping the seeds sown by these people of great faith.

Therefore, far from being an obstacle to lead, people can only benefit from leaders with values like those of Beppe Fenech Adami.
