Jesmond Caruana, head of the Malta Weightlifting Association, has just returned from London where he acted as Competitions Secretary for the international federation during events at the Olympic Games.
In London, Caruana also participated at a Congress for Commonwealth weightlifting organisations where he presented a report on the country’s preparations for the Commonwealth Championships in Malta next April.
Most of the member associations have already pledged their participation for the various events in store.
However, Caruana’s presentation came handy to those still mulling their presence for the champion-ships next year.
During the congress, the world body selected five technical delegates, one from each continent, to start preliminary workings for the 2014 Commonwealth Games which will be staged in Scotland.
Caruana was given the task to represent European interests as Sam Coffa, vice president at the international federation, was appointed for Australia and Oceania while Moira Lassen will represent the Americas, Kevin DuPlooy the Africa region and Subramanya Kumbasi for Asia.
Caruana’s appointment enhances the Maltese association’s reputation outside our shores as it continues to get more involved in international matters dealing with the sport of weightlifting.
