The number of cars on the road has continued to go up, reaching 329,053 by the end of June, a 3.2 per cent rise over the same time last year.
Data released yesterday by the National Statistics Office showed second-hand imported cars accounted for the majority of newly licensed vehicles, which has been the trend in the last few years.
In the second quarter, 2,842 new licences were issued for second-hand imported vehicles – 54 per cent of the total.
Eight in 10 of the vehicles on the road were passenger cars while 14.2 per cent were commercial vehicles and 5.4 per cent motorcycles.
Buses and minibuses accounted for less than one per cent.
Petrol engines make up six in 10 of the total.
