Forty-three people were arrested over the weekend for drug offences, the police said yesterday.

Thirty-eight of them were arrested in Gozo, whose offbeat Carnival celebrations traditionally attract crowds of revellers from Malta.

Most of the arrests took place on Saturday night in a series of raids and searches.

One person was held for trafficking and another four were found in possession of cocaine and ecstasy that the police say were not for their personal use.

The rest were arrested for possession of ecstasy, cocaine or cannabis.

Meanwhile, five people aged between 20 and 27 were arrested at Ċirkewwa on Friday, even before making it to Gozo, with the police finding ecstasy, cannabis grass and resin in their possession.
