For the second year running, our precious carnival, which dates back to the time of the Knights, has fallen victim to bureaucracy and the weather. No one has any control over the weather, of course, but surely something can be done to avoid seeing all the considerable effort put in by the makers of carnival floats and the organisers of the dance companies go to waste.

Many meetings have been held between carnival enthusiasts and the Government regarding the creation of a proper Carnival Village with purpose-built, secure workshops, where, apart from putting together these artistic creations in a safe environment, they can be kept for visitors to admire after the four days before Lent.

Extending the few days over two weekends before Lent might make the chances of good weather more likely. It is just heartbreaking to see months of hard work being destroyed by the elements and lack of compassion.

Carnival is part of our culture. The responsible ministry must act and do something positive to ensure the long-term enjoyment provided by the few who receive a pittance for their endeavours. This year, I went to Valletta twice – on the Saturday and on the Monday. The weather then was quite good. On the Monday, I was able to take a close look at the floats. I was amazed at their quality and detail and their high standard.

I was privileged to speak to Pawlu Curmi, Il-Pampalun (above) who personifies Malta’s carnival as he proudly stood by his delightful contribution. I have known him for at least half a century through thick and thin.

Thanks to his abiding love of carnival, he carries on, facing all adversity with his usual smile. When he saw me he raised his hands, pointing to the sky and told me they were not allowed to take the floats into Valletta that day even though Monday was the only fine day we had.

Sunday’s parade was cancelled because of the weather as was Tuesday’s grand finale, so all the work and effort that usually entertains thousands of Maltese and tourists was literally washed away.
