The elderly, workers and students would find that it benefits them to start using the new card system when using public transport, Transport Minister Joe Mizzi told Parliament yesterday.

Replying to a question by Robert Cutajar (PN), Mr Mizzi insisted the fares would not be rising.

The new card system would be more advantageous to most commuters than at present, particularly the elderly, students and frequent users.

An information campaign on the new bus fares will be launched next March.

The card will be distributed to all free of charge and would then be topped up with no time limit. The fares would not be changed before July.
