The Żebbuġ local council stepped in to remove carcasses dumped in a residential area and is working with the police and wardens to increase surveillance in the area.

The carcasses were dumped on Wednesday night near a privately-owned skip in Ħal Mula Street with residents complaining that the area had become a dumping ground for anyone who had any type of waste to get rid of. Residents complained the road was filthy and the smells unbearable.

They said although the skip in question was owned by a grocery store there, people were dumping all sorts of rubbish near it because it was kept locked. Apart from carcasses, rubbish included boxes, black garbage bags and all sorts of other waste, including used appliances.

When contacted, executive secretary Christopher Formosa said the council was informed about the matter in the morning by health inspectors who were sent on site to investigate a complaint.

He said the council immediately mobilised its contractors and the carcasses and rubbish was cleared “within the hour”.

Mr Formosa said the council had not received any complaints on the matter but found out “because the health inspector was kind enough to let us know”.

He insisted the skip was privately owned by a “law-abiding citizen” who was “targeted by irresponsible people who were taking the liberty of using this skip as their personal dumping site”. He locked the skip but rubbish was dumped near it.

Mr Formosa invited residents living in the area to look out for people or vehicles that could be dumping rubbish near the skip and to report them in confidence to the police or the council.
