While on one hand I am pleased to note that there is a serious effort to reduce the carbon footprint (and the cost) of street lighting by investing in the latest LED lighting fixtures, I cannot understand how the festoon along Mellieħa bay:

a ) first and foremost continues to make use of the old incandescent light bulbs that are anything but energy savers;

b ) kept switched on all night long in the summer months, when it can easily be switched off at a decent hour like, say, 2am; and

c ) is still lit everyday (all night long as well) in winter when the number of people on the Mellieħa beach during the night is absolutely minimum and surely does not justify the expense.

Not only are we wasting fossil fuel and causing unnecessary pollution but we are burning away taxpayers’ money.

I hope that the local council or the central government takes action immediately.
